Abstract

Gross hypertrophy of the carotid body may be found in man or in animals living at high altitudes (Arias-Stella 1969; Arias-Stella and Valcarcel 1973, 1976; Edwards et al. 1971b). It is evident that the carotid body is also chronically stimulated in patients suffering from any condition that leads to insufficient oxygenation, namely in patients with chronic pulmonary or cardiovascular diseases (Edwards et al. 1971a; Heath 1973; Heath et al. 1970).
