Abstract

A. Lectins are proteins or glycoproteins which bind certain sugars or oligosaccharides specifically (Sharon and Lis 1972; Goldstein and Hayes 1978). Originally found principally in plants (Leguminosae are particularly good sources), it is known that they are widespread also in animals and recent studies have indicated their presence on the membranes of several types of human cells.
