Isolation and Reconstitution of Band 3, the Anion Transporter of the Human Red Blood Cell Membrane

  • Chapter
Membrane Proteins

Abstract

The assignment of a given membrane function to a particular class of membrane polypeptides rests on their identification by chemical labeling methods and on their isolation in a reasonably pure form by means conservative of the function. Solubilization and reconstitution of membrane functions is important for assessing the modulatory role of lipids and other protein constutuents as well as for gaining further insights into the architecture of functional sites and the underlying molecular mechanisms (Racker 1977).
