Cytokinin Action on Transcription and Translation in Plants

  • Conference paper

Part of the book series: Proceedings in Life Sciences ((LIFE SCIENCES))

Abstract

Cytokinins are well known to activate the syntheses of total RNA and proteins in plant tissues sensitive to this phytohormone [1–6]. The aim of this paper is to discuss the following questions:

  1. 1.

What is the mechanism of activation of total RNA biosynthesis in plant cells by cytokinin?

  2. 2.

Is the activation of RNA synthesis, i.e., increase in ribosome number and mRNA amount in cells the only mode of cytokinin action on protein synthesis or can cytokinin in addition take part in the control of protein synthesis at posttranscriptional level?

  3. 3.

If cytokinin participates in regulation of protein synthesis at posttranscriptional level, is this effect due to the primary cytokinin action at transcriptional level?

These aspects of cytokinin effects were investigated in our laboratory on detached barley leaves [7–11] and isolated pumpkin cotyledons [12–15].
