Abstract

Epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV) is a disease ordinarily beginning in childhood and characterized by widespread chronic pityriasis versicolor-like lesions (PV-like), multiple bowenoid cancers, and usually depressed cell-mediated immunity (5). It has been shown that benign lesions are induced by human papillomavirus group 5 (HPV-5) (9), and that HPV-5 is potentially oncogenic since most all patients with the severe form of EV have skin cancers and those cancers so far studied contain multiple copies of this viral genome (8).
