Abstract

The term dysmenorrhea refers to painful menstruation. Whereas in many papers on dysmenorrhea quite dissimilar conditions are lumped together, we propose to use the terms dysmenorrhea or algomenorrhea to refer only to episodes of pelvic pain whose duration is limited to the period of menstrual loss or which start 1, or at the earliest, 2 days before and stop 1, or at the latest, 2 days after the blood loss. Pain episodes that start earlier or last longer generally have another pathogenesis and should not be called dysmenorrhea.
