Abstract

Pig blastocyst tissue as early as the 12th day of gestation displays a marked capacity to synthesize oestrogens in vitro (Heap et al., this volume, p. 157). Definitive evidence for oestrogen synthesis by recrystallization has recently been obtained from steroid precursors pregnenolone, progesterone, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHA), and androstenedione (Gadsby et al. 1976)suggesting the presence of these pathways of oestrogen synthesis shown in Fig. 1 (Heap et al., p. 161).
