Abstract

The pathology of furunculosis shows considerable evidence of the production of virulence factors by the causative agent Aeromonas salmonicida (Mackie and Menzies, 1938; Klontz et al., 1966; Ferguson and McCarthy, 1978). Indeed there are accounts of haemolytic (Karlsson, 1962) and leucocytolytic activity (Klontz et al., 1966; Fuller et al., 1977) as well as protease (Shieh and McLean, 1975) production. Production of enzymes showing similar and other activites has been demonstrated in other Aeromonad species (Wadstrom et al., 1976). However, there has been little success in demonstrating that these extracellular products either singly or in combination can reproduce in part or, in whole, the pathology of furunculosis. Attempts with cell wall preparations of A. salmonicida have failed to show pathology in fish (Ross, 1966; Paterson, 1972; Anderson, 1973).
