Liquid Crystals of One- and Two-Dimensional Order

Part of the book series: Springer Series in Chemical Physics ((CHEMICAL,volume 11))

Abstract

The majority of liquid crystal display devices are currently based on the twisted nematic electro-optic effect and although this effect has many advantages its inherent limitations are also becoming known. Attention is therefore being drawn to possible uses of the smectic and cholesteric phases of liquid crystals. These are examined, concentrating exclusively on the electro-optic and thermo-optic applications.
