Abstract
The factors which influence the allergic response are complex and only partially understood. At the level of the mast cell and basophil, the amount of cell-bound IgE and the concentration of antigen are important. These two measurable parameters are not sufficient however to determine the response of a basophil to an antigenic stimulus. The purpose of this presentation is to discuss the concept of “releasability”: first, to review its application to the human basophil system; second, to present data in which we try to assess “releasability” in human skin; and third, to note some of the literature which is related to this concept.
