Abstract
The phenomenon of low plasma renin activity in approximately 25% of essential hypertensives has initiated a great deal of interest into investigating signs of mineralocorticoid excesss in these patients. The results obtained were highly controversial. However, several abnormalities in mineralocorticoid production in patients with essential hypertension have been reported by the groups of Melby [12] and Genest [5, 6] and Luetscher [2, 4] demonstrating an inappropriate suppression of aldosterone secretion in essential hypertensives by sodium loading.
