Abstract
Hypoplasias and aplasias of the radius (synonyms: radial ray defect, radial club hand) belong to a group of inhibitory malformations in which the radial portion of the upper limb bud has been damaged. Their increased endemic appearance caused by the thalidomide embryopathies gave us an opportunity to advance our knowledge of the morphology and functional anatomy of these relatively rare differentiation disorders (see Lenz 1963; O. Hepp 1962; Blauth 1968, 1969; Schöllner 1972; Willert and Henkel 1969; a.o.).
