Concluding Remarks

The imidazole derivatives have substantially broadened and enhanced possibilities for the local antimycotic treatment of the skin and mucous membranes. A final judgement cannot yet be made on the systemic administration of the imidazole derivatives. Further studies and observations are necessary, and perhaps imidazole derivatives other than those now available will one day solve the problems still associated with the treatment of systemic mycoses due to yeasts and molds. Today, the situation look most promising with ketoconazole, an imidazole derivative active upon oral administration.
