Structure of the System Required to Handle Problems in the European Community Related to Inborn Errors of Metabolism
This unit will work closely with the local cytogenetics unit(s) and will deal with a population of 5–6 million, say 50 000–80 000 births a year. It will be responsible for the neonatal screening, diagnosis, treatment, counseling and education (i.e. significant clinical involvement). The majority of first-tier units will be able to investigate problem cases in some depth.
