Stimulation of Hemopoiesis in Aplastic Anemia by Hormones and Other Agents

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Haematology and Blood Transfusion / Hämatologie und Bluttransfusion ((HAEMATOLOGY,volume 24))

Abstract

Many attempts to treat aplastic anemia have been attempts to stimulate directly or indirectly the production of blood cells by the hemopoietic tissue. The majority of compounds which have been used are hormones or hormone-analoges. This is easy to understand, because for a long time it was assumed that the regulation of hemopoiesis is under hormonal control, and because it was speculated that aplastic anemia might be a disorder of regulation. The intention of this lecture is to review the results of such treatments, including two nonhormonal drugs, Cobalt and Lithium, and to discuss to what extent the clinical results are consistant with the current hypothesis on the pathogenesis of aplastic anemia [27, 7, 33].
