Pathophysiology of Postoperative Pulmonary Complications

Abstract

The general architecture and physiology of the normal lung including the large and small airways, vasculature, innervation, lymphatic drainage, and basic blood gas exchange functions are assumed to be familiar to most participants. In the following sections particular attention will be directed to those structural and physiological changes which seem principally altered in postoperative respiratory complications and in the “Adult respiratory distress syndrome” (ARDS). For a review of those aspects of normal pulmonary structure and functions which will not be covered, the recent book by Murray [7] is recommended.
