Zusammenfassung
Die meisten Bakterien sind von einer Zellwand umgeben. Diese besteht aus einem Mureinnetz (einem Mureinsacculus), das den Bakterien eine Starrheit der Struktur und Schutz gegen mechanische Belastung verleiht; es wirkt darüberhinaus dem osmotischen Druck der Zellinhaltsstoffe entgegen. Bakterien leben ja in der Regel in Medien, deren osmotischer Druck wesentlich geringer ist als der im Zellinneren. Die Zellwand trägt einen Mantel aus Kohlenhydraten mit einer Vielfalt unterschiedlicher Funktionen. Sie determinieren die antigene Spezifität, sind für die Wechselwirkung zwischen Bakterien und Wirtszellen verantwortlich und haben schließlich eine entscheidende Bedeutung für die Klassifizierung der Bakterien.
