Abstract

Whatever the process of understanding may be, when information is understood, it must be assimilated to cognitive categories, structures, or programs. The nature of these structures is at present a widely studied topic in psychology, as witness the amount of work in the fields of semantic memory and artificial intelligence of natural language. Most of the experimental work has dealt with structures and processing of concepts underlying nouns, and with relations between these concepts. For some overview articles see SMITH et al. (1974); COLLINS and LOFTUS (1975); BREUKER (1976); NOORDMAN-VONK and NOORDMAN (1975) and SMITH (1978), NOORDMAN-VONK (1979).
