Effects of Kinins on Organ Systems

  • Chapter
Book cover Bradykinin, Kallidin and Kallikrein

Part of the book series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology ((HEP,volume 25 / 1))

Abstract

Kinins have an impressive array of effects on various physiological functions. They can affect organ systems directly or indirectly through their interactions with neural pathways and with other mediators. The recently recognized effects of kinins on prostaglandin synthesis and metabolism (see next Chapter) emphasize the potentially broad-range effects these potent peptides may have. However, kinins presently have no generally accepted role in normal physiology. While many cellular and metabolic actions of kinins are reviewed elsewhere in this volume (see Terragno and Terragno; Odya and Goodfriend), this chapter will address some of the prominent actions of kinins of cardiovascular, pulmonary, gastrointestinal and reproductive functions.
