Carbon Cardiovascular Devices

Assisted Circulation

Abstract

Carbon commonly occurs in nature in two well-defined, three-dimensional crystalline forms, graphite and diamond. Graphite has a hexagonal structure with the individual carbon atoms bound together with strong covalent bonds to form planar hexagonal arrays. The layers are stacked in an ordered sequence to form a well-defined, three-dimensional structure. In the diamond form, each atom has four neighbors arranged around it tetrahedrally.
