Abstract
The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) occupies a unique position among human herpesviruses in that it is the only one which has been shown to be capable of forming a true latent infection whereby complete copies of the virus genome persist in replicating cells (reviewed by Epstein and Achong, 1977). Two human cell types have been demonstrated to harbor latent EBV genomes, B lymphocytes (bone marrow-derived lymphocyte) (Jondal et al., 1973; Pattengale et al., 1973), and epithelial tumor cells in nasopharyngeal carcinomas (NPC) (Wolf etal., 1973).
