Zusammenfassung
Das Blut wurde immer schon als etwas Mystisches und mit Faszination von Menschen bedacht — ein Lebensspender und Jungbrunnen. Schon die Alten berichteten von Blutübertragungen, gewöhnlich von Schafen und Hunden auf den Menschen. Sie beobachteten, daß diese Transfusionen immer Fieber, Hämoglobinurie und nicht selten den Tod des Patienten nach sich zogen. Blundell (1818), den man als den Vater der modernen Bluttransfusion betrachten kann, erkannte als erster, daß Transfusionen innerhalb der gleichen Spezies, z. B. Hund auf Hund oder Mensch auf Mensch, sehr viel besser vertragen werden, obwohl auch dann noch Zwischenfälle auftraten. Dieses Problem wurde erst um 1900 gelöst, als Landsteiner, nachdem er das ABO-Blutgruppensystem entdeckt hatte, die Posttransfusions- Reaktion als Wechselwirkung zwischen Spender-Erythrozyten und Isoantikörpern (oder treffender Alloantikörper) im Serum des Empfängers deutete.
