Abstract

The development of geotectonics has always been closely linked with the progress of all the Earth sciences, initially with geology, and more recently with geology, geophysics, and geochemistry. The rise of scientific geology must be dated to the eighteenth century, when the mining industry began to develop and a practical need arose to understand the structure of the crust for prospecting and exploration.
