Die Letalität schwerer Mehrfachverletzungen ist immer noch außerordentlich hoch. Todesursache ist jedoch häufig nicht die Verletzung selbst, sondern die Entwicklung einer sog. Schocklunge, deren Letalität, einschließlich der postoperativen und septischen Fälle, bis zu 70% beträgt (36, 43, 122).
