Special Groups of Cases of Stone and Their Treatment

  • Chapter
Renal Calculus

Abstract

Calculi may occur in both kidneys and one or both ureters simultaneously, or in both kidneys in sequence and often at intervals of some years. If it is decided to remove bilateral renal calculi at two separate operations, the stone in the kidney adjudged to be better functionally should be removed first, the stone in the opposite kidney being removed after a suitable interval. Pain experienced in one kidney may influence the surgeon to operate on that side first. A tiny symptom-free calyceal stone on the contralateral (non-painful) side may be left to be voided spontaneously. The problem of operation for large bilateral calyceal and pelvic calculi of approximately equal size has already been touched on.
