Zusammenfassung

Julian Huxley (1938a) hatte ganz recht, als er feststellte: „Keine von Darwins Thesen ist so heftig angegriffen worden wie die der sexuellen Auslese.“ Die Gründe für diese weitverbreitete Kritik sind mannigfaltig; einige von ihnen wollen wir uns in diesem Aufsatz etwas näher ansehen. Wenn auch ein Teil der kritischen Einwände berechtigt war, so ist heute doch unbestritten, daß Darwin im Prinzip recht hatte und daß der Begriff „sexuelle Auslese“ dazu beigetragen hat, eine Vielzahl zerstreuter Beobachtungen zusammenzubringen und zu ordnen (für eine Zusammenfassung der Ansichten Darwins. The Descent of Man, S. 613–6172). Die Vitalität des Prinzips dokumentiert sich am besten in der großen Reihe neuerer Übersichtsreferate oder auch in der Häufigkeit, mit der in allgemeinen Lehrbüchern ein Kapitel auf diese Frage verwendet wird (Boesiger, 1967; Campbell, 1972; Ghiselin, 1969, 1974; Huxley, 1938a, b, c; Maynard Smith, 1958).
