Abstract
Unlike elective surgical patients those with multisystem trauma will not have a complete physiologic evaluation pre opera tively. The burden, therefore, falls on the anesthetist since occult injuries which often remain undetected may not appear until during the anesthetic procedure. Specific details of the accident will provide clues as to possible injuries that may be missed. In addition the most obvious wounds such as lacerations may not be the most significant. Cardiovascular complications, such as great vessel rupture or penetrating wounds of the heart are life threatening. Also pulmonary and many neurologic injuries require immediate attention.
