Abstract
In summer 1976, the synthesis of trichlorophenol in Seveso went out of control. Tetrachlordibenzodioxin (known as TCDD) was formed. A total of 3.5 kg TCDD leaked from the Icmesa works into the environment and poisoned the area. Part of the population had to be evacuated; it has until today not been possible to remove this completely water-insoluble poison from the area. The number of intoxications and secondary damage cannot yet be predicted. It is very difficult to treat the poisoning.
