Abstract

The development of the mammalian ovum in the course of early embryogenesis is characterized not only by morphologic changes described in the preceding section but also by biochemical and functional changes. In this section morphologie and functional relationships will be discussed, based not only on our own results but also on information obtained from the investigation of the ultrastructure (occasionally of the microscopic structure) in ova of various animal species and on comparison of analogous biochemical and experimental data. The information was mostly obtained in lower species of vertebrates and invertebrates, and their applicability to mammals is limited. By summing up current findings concerning the problems of cell surfaces and intercellular contacts, of the nucleus, nucleoprotein structures, and proteosynthesis, of mitochondria and energetic metabolism, of lysosomes, of the occurrence of stored materials and their metabolism in the segmenting ova, it is our goal to further reserarch objectives which should aim at the practical application of the results obtained in veterinary medicine and which should become an impetus for purposeful studies in human medicine.
