Part of the book series: Advances in Neurosurgery ((NEURO,volume 5))

Abstract

According to a field study by SCHNELLBÄCHER (4), 80% of all cases of brain damage occuring in the Cologne area are treated in the Neurosurgical Clinic or examined if the presence of a hematoma is suspected. Even so, the number of hematomas that are not verified is unknown, whereas the control exerted on patients treated within the sphere of activity of our clinic is relatively efficient. This is proved by the fact that autopsies on 114 out of 634 of our patients who died from their injuries between 1971 and 1976 were carried out in the Forensic Institute (Table 1). In the remaining cases, prosecution authorities showed no interest in having an autopsy performed.
