Influence of Arterial Impedance on Ventricular Function

  • Chapter
The Arterial System

Abstract

The input impedance of the aorta is a measure of the extent to which the arterial system opposes the ejection of blood by the left ventricle, and the same is true for the pulmonary artery and right ventricle. Arterial impedance, therefore, represents the load on the heart [4] and influences the ventricles in two ways: by affecting ventricular work and by determining the relationships between pressure and flow. The input impedance of an artery is calculated experimentally from the frequency components of observed pressure and flow waves and is expressed as a complex frequency spectrum.

The experimental work reported here was a collaborative effort of Drs. C.R. Conti, W.W. Nichols, P. Sipkema, W.E. Walker, and W.R. Milnor.
