Abstract

The first clear-cut evidence of the existence of circadian endocrine rhythms in the rat was reported 30 years ago, when EVERETT and Sawyer (1950) demonstrated that the ovulatory surge of LH in the course of the estrous cycle could be blocked by anesthetics, but only at given periods of the nychtemera. Under these conditions, ovulation was postponed by 24 h and the procedure could be repeated on consecutive days, provided the anesthetics were always administered between 13.00 and 16.00.
