Zusammenfassung
Ein Eisenmangel ist die häufigste Ursache für Anämien im Kindesalter. Bei Betrachtung der Altersverteilung der Eisenmangelanämie oder—des empfindlicheren Index—der Untersättigung (unter 16%) des Transferrins im Serum ergibt sich ein charakteristisches Bild: Ein Eisenmangel fehlt praktisch in den ersten 6 Lebensmonaten. Die Frequenz steigt dann sprunghaft an, erreicht den Gipfel am Ende des zweiten bis zum vierten Lebenshalb jähr und fällt zum Schulalter wieder merklich ab (Abb. 1). Die Erklärung für diese altersabhängige Verteilung des Eisenmangels ergibt sich aus dem Verständnis der altersabhängigen Modifikationen des Eisenstoffwechsels.
