Abstract
Not only biologic factors, but also the differing mechanical circumstances with which joints contend are important in the etiology of athrosis. Clinical observations as well as experimental studies in animals support this view. How far arthritic changes can be produced experimentally in animals by the prolonged action of mechanical influences on articular cartilage is the subject of the present investigations. The method has been to observe and evaluate the micromorphologic changes produced by measured compression and by measured distraction during immobilization.
