Abstract

The structural principles of the hip and leg skeleton enunciated by Pauwels, the static and dynamic changes induced by HA and the influence of arthrodesis on the neighbouring joints have been discussed. Logical conlusions were drawn with respect to indications and contraindications for HA and guide lines for the choice of operation (10, HA, TP) have been laid down. The different procedures have been described in detail and the stress distribution resulting from certain operations has been analysed using a laboratory model.
