Abstract

The organization of development is a major unsolved problem in biology. Beginning with a more or less homogeneous egg, more and more complex patterns of differentiated cells are reproducibly formed. How this development has to proceed must be genetically determined. However, the genetic material in each cell of an organism can be assumed to be the same. We have a degree of understanding of how DNA determines the amino acid sequence of proteins and how it is involved in the regulation of the transcription, but we have less understanding of how these processes in turn determine development.
