Abstract

As already suggested in Chapter 2, energy transfer from other absorbing species to rare earth ions may sensitize crystalline and glass lasers. In practice, the important energy donors have allowed transitions of high intensity. This is due to the fact that the narrow band absorption and emission in the lanthanides (which are essential for the laser activity) arise from parity-forbidden weak transitions. On the other hand, the parity-allowed transitions in Ce3+ and Tb3+ and in post-transition group ions such as Tl+, Pb2+ and Bi3+ (isoelectronic with the neutral mercury atom) generally correspond to emission of broad bands, which generally are not suitable for laser action alone, but can be excellent for laser pumping by energy transfer processes. If weak transitions (such as the 3d5 transitions in Mn2+ or the exceptionally weak electron transfer band in UO2+ 2) have sufficiently long-lived excited states, they may work also. Energy transfer may increase the population of excited levels of lanthanides by one or two orders of magnitude compared with direct absorption of light into the rare earth ions. The interpretation of energy transfer in glasses may be complicated by inhomogeneous broadening in vitreous media with the result that the chances for a donor ion to be within a sufficiently short distance from an acceptor ion resulting in a rapid resonance transfer are rather low, and an additional factor responsible for the energy transfer must be considered.
