Abstract

A poor nutritional status is frequently encountered in the cancer patient and is an important factor in all stages of the disease. Antineoplastic therapy often aggravates this condition, sometimes to the point where no therapeutic act may be undertaken or only a less than adequate treatment may be realized. Parenteral nutrition is the only method which permits the restoration of a patient’s nutritional status to a point sufficient to withstand aggressive therapy. It may be continued for a long time period and is compatible with patient comfort.
