Abstract

Human multiple myeloma (MM) is a disease characterized by a malignant proliferation of B-cells which produce monoclonal immunoglobulins which can be detected on the tumor cell surface as well as in the serum and/or urine. Benign monoclonal hyperglobulinemia (BMH) and MM share this aspect in common. However, they appear to be quite different from the clinical standpoint. The precise controlling mechanism which in one patient may produce an isolated monoclonal immunoglobulin without symptoms and in an other the same sort of homogenous immunoglobulin associated with malignant proliferation of the myeloma cells and ultimate death is not clearly understood.
