Abstract

The oncogenic effects of inorganic arsenic compounds in man are well known. Paris (1820) described occupational skin cancers following exposure to arsenic, and v. Pein (1943), Liebegott (1949), Roth (1956), Hess (1956), Galy et al. (1963), Thiers et al. (1967), and Denk et al. (1969) described tumors of the skin, bronchi, and liver in German and French winegrowers. Carcinomas caused by the arsenic content of the drinking water were observed in Reichenstein, Silesia (Geyer, 1898), Cordoba, Argentinia (Arguello et al., 1939), and on the southwest coast of Taiwan (Yeh et al., 1968)1. Experimental studies on arsenic carcinogenicity revealed contradictory results (Askenazy, 1926; Büngeler, 1958; Knoth, 1966; Osswald and Goerttler, 1971).
