Abstract
The preparation of boron nitride was first reported by Baimain (BAL-MAIN, 1842) in the middle of the nineteenth century. It remained as a laboratory curiosity until the mid part of the current century. Hot pressing techniques were devised permitting commercial development of molded samples (TAYLOR, 1957, 1958, 1959), Interest was especially heightened because of its unusual combination of properties which included excellent electrical insulating character, thermal stability, corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. A second advance in the commercial use of BN occurred with the successful preparation of boron nitride fiber (ECONOMY and ANDERSON, 1966a). The availability of boron nitride in a fiber form has greatly increased the scope of its application. In this paper the preparation, structure, properties and application of boron nitride fiber are reviewed.
