Abstract
The comparative investigation of the embryonal development of the morphometric parameters, presented in this study, is based on one typical example each of six distinct structural types of placenta. These six types can be briefly characterised with the help of classifications dating back to Strahl (1906) and Grosser (1909) and of further morphological criteria, even though these classifications present certain problems on closer scrutiny (Portmann, 1938; Ludwig, 1968). These six types and their typical examples are as follows: 1) Discoid placenta, haemochorial: Man. 2) Discoid placenta, haemochorial labyrinth with several trophoblast layers: Rat. 3) Zonary placenta, endotheliochorial: Cat. 4) Cotyledonary placenta, epitheliochorial: Cow. 5) Diffuse placenta with well-developed dendritic villi, epitheliochorial: Horse. 6) Diffuse placenta with folds and stump-like villi, epitheliochorial: Pig.
