Zusammenfassung
Der Ausdruck „essentielle Fettsäuren“ wurde von BURR und BURR (2.) geprägt, die 1929 als erste das Bild eines Mangels an essentiellen Fettsäuren an der jungen Ratte zeigen konnten und ein Jahr später auch nachwiesen, daß durch Zufuhr von bestimmten Fettsäuren, speziell Linolsäure, dieses Krankheitsbild wieder geheilt wird. Der Mangel an essentiellen Fettsäuren äußerte sich bei diesen jungen Ratten in einem verminderten Wachstum, struppigem Fell, Schwanznekrosen, vermindertem Muskeltonus, erhöhtem Wasserverbrauch, erhöhtem Grundumsatz, Fertilitätsstörungen und histologischen Veränderungen an Haut, Niere, Ovarien und Testes. Ein weiterer Meilenstein in der Erforschung der essentiellen Fettsäuren waren die Untersuchungen von HANSEN et al. (7), die 1958 erstmals beim Menschen, und zwar beim Säugling, das klinische Bild eines Linolsäuremangels in Form eines schuppenden Hautausschlages zeigen konnten. Durch orale Zufuhr von Linolsäure in einer Menge von 1,3% der Energie konnten diese Veränderungen innerhalb einer Woche gebessert und nach drei Wochen geheilt werden. Das klinische Bild eines Linolsäuremangels beim Erwachsenen wurde von COLLINS et al. (4) 1969 beobachtet. Bei ihrem Patienten mußte der Dünndarm bis auf einen Rest von 6o cm Länge entfernt und die Ernährung über viele Wochen parenteral ohne Fett durchgeführt werden. Nach 60–70 Tagen trat ein schuppender Hautausschlag auf, der nach Zufuhr einer linolsäurehaltigen Fettemulsion wieder verschwand. Absetzen der Linolsäurezufuhr provozierte erneut den Hautausschlag. Zusätzlich wurde eine gegenüber Gaben von Eisen, Vitamin B-12 un Folsäure resistente Anämie beobachtet.
