Abstract

Luminescence in a body is the emission of light on irradiation with a beam of shorter wavelength. When this effect ceases with the irradiation (the response time being less than 1 μs) the phenomenon is called fluorescence. When there is an after effect, it is called phosphorescence. For detailed information the following literature may be consulted: Pringsheim (1949, 1951), Passwatev (1967).
