Abstract
All neurosurgeons have faced the problem of patients who have been shunted for hydrocephalus and in whom it seems doubtful if the valve is working properly. Usually the doubt is resolved by observing the patient, since surgeons are reluctant to operate because of the steep rise in morbidity that goes with multiple operations on valves.
