Abstract

Elucidation of the spatial arrangement of photochemical and biochemical functions in photosynthetic membranes is central to understanding the processes of electron transport, ion movements, and energy transduction. Chemical modification of specific membrane groups provides a new approach to the study of the molecular architecture of chloroplast membranes, finding application as (1) a covalently bound marker for the membrane functions, (2) a means of probing the role of specific chemical groups in relation to function, and (3) as a probe to study conformational changes associated with energy transduction.
