Abstract

The cytochromes are intracellular chromoproteins found by Keilin to undergo reversible spectral changes in tissue from animals, plants and bacteria. The first observations on plants were made with a microspectroscope by Keilin on dithionite-treated slices of non-chlorophyllous plant tissue. The early history of this work has been described by Keilin and Keilin (1966). Spectroscopic distinction between c- and b-type cytochrome in the green part of the leaf material was first made by Hill and Scarisbrick (1951), and redox determinations in etiolated barley chloroplasts by Hill (1954). Duysens and Amesz (1962) applied sensitive spectrophotometric techniques to infer the position of an f- or c-like cytochrome between two different pigment systems of the alga Porphyridium cruentum. At about the same time LundegÄrdh (1961) studied the light-induced redox changes of cytochrome f as well as the two b cytochromes. Recently published sources of general information on plant and algal cytochromes are Bendall et al. (1971), Yakushiji (1971), Mitsui (1971), and Lemberg and Barrett (1973).
