Electrokinetic Processes on Natural and Artificial Blood Vessels

Blood Vessels

Abstract

Members of this group have studied the physical chemistry of the blood vascular interface for 25 years (SAWYER and PATE, 1953a). Our initial findings stemmed from the investigations of the healing characteristics of preserved vascular bypass grafts, the freezed dried homograft (SAWYER and PATE, 1953b, c). It was during these experiments that we observed that under normal in vivo conditions, the vascular interface is invariably negatively charged (SAWYER and PATE, 1953b). From these early beginnings developed a series of experiments evaluating the effect of both charge and electric currents on thrombosis of the vascular tree (SAWYER and DEUTSCH, 1956; SAWYER et al. , 1960). The communication which follows will be divided into four sections.
