Abstract
Negative findings appear in print less frequently than positive ones, which must be a reason why so few workers (e.g. Kolmer, 1936; Leach 1963) have discussed the possibility of recognising, among cone cells of the mammalian retina, structural differences which might correspond with the three receptor functions in trichromatic vision. In fact, the three kinds of cone in the primate eye (Marks et al., 1964; Brown and Wald, 1964) have remained obstinately indistinguishable by their structure, so that almost nothing is known about the morphological basis of the neural colour channels in the advanced mammalian retina. Polyak (1941) must have felt this deficiency of knowledge particularly keenly as he applied black inks to his intricate diagrams of retinal neuronal architecture, unable to take account of the colour functions of the nerve cells he illustrated.
