The Trunnion Bearing Total Hip Prosthesis

Abstract

The trunnion bearing total hip prosthesis was designed in 1961. Challenging the inevitable phenomenon of wear, a femoral head made of plastic material mated with a femoral component on a trunnion, with a pelvic component in a ball and socket joint, the two peripheral components being made of chromium cobalt alloy (1–8). Wear would be restricted to the interpositum, thus allowing easy replacement, leaving the cemented main components untouched (Fig. 1).
